May Book Haul!! // also including february, march, and april…haha

Hi friends! I’m super hyped to share some books with you, because apparently I haven’t done a book haul since January. Yikes. I think I’m only going to share the physical books I’ve read, and the digital books I have to read!

bought

Chain of Gold by Cassandra Clare | I DID IT. I finally bought my most anticipated book of 2020*. The cover is so beautiful! And I’m beyond hyped to jump back into the world of Victorian Herondales and Carstaires and Lightwoods and Blackthorns.

*i’m so hypocritical i haven’t finished lord of shadows yet…not since starting it in december 2018 🙂

received from publisher

Every Reason We Shouldn’t by Sara Fujimara | I read this already, and I loved the Korean and Japanese-American representation! However, I wasn’t fully invested in the characters, plot, or relationships. So a little disappointing for sure! Basically, this follows a girl who wants to be an Olympic ice skater, and she meets this guy who also wants to be one. I won this in a giveaway!

A Song Below Water by Bethany C. Morrow | Another giveaway win! I’m actually considering dnf-ing this. I think it definitely has some important racial, social, and politic themes in it! But I never realized how much I dislike magical realism. It’s all too confusing for my smol brain. However, I think that this is still an amazing read, focusing on racism and social issues! The genre is simply not for me, but the message is for everyone.

Where Dreams Descend by Janella Angeles | ASDFGHJKL THANK YOU SOOO MUCH WEDNESDAY BOOKS FOR AN ARC OF THIS. This is literally one of my most anticipated books of the entire year because magicians and circuses and competitions???? Phantom of the Opera meets Moulin Rouge??? I’m ALL IN.

scribd

The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle | I guess they changed the name of this book? It used to be the 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle I think. Anyways, I have no idea what this is about!! But I know it’s a mystery/thriller, so I’m excited!

e-arcs

Jo and Laurie by Margaret Stohl and Melissa De La Cruz | Y’all know how much I adore Little Women, both the movie and the book. And this is a retelling, about – you guessed it – Jo and Laurie! This has the potential to be a gimmicky attempt that devolves into fanfiction, or a classy retelling tackling the possibility of another ending.

The Game by Linsey Miller | I believe that this is about a girl at a high school, and they pick someone to play an assassin each year? I’m not sure why*? But apparently, actual people begin being murdered. And in order of the alphabet. This gives me Agatha Christie’s ABC Murders’s vibes!

*like high school isn’t murderous enough

They Wish They Were Us by Jessica Goodman | This sounds like it might have a touch of dark academia to it???? It’s a murder mystery at an exclusive prep school! I’m super excited for this one!

That’s it! I’m so excited for all of these unread books! Tell me:

What’s a book you’ve hauled this month???

Have you read any of these, or are they on your TBR?

  1. I really wanted to try A Song Below Water. That cover ❤ But I'm really not in to magical realism and I wasn't aware that this had it. Usually it's a DNF for me when MR is involved too heavily in to a book. Hope you enjoy the rest Kaya!

  2. Omg am I actually one ahead of you with Cassandra Clare? I’ve read Lord Of Shadows but not the final of those three (although tbh it’s been so long that I’m going to reread it anyway 😂). I hadn’t heard of The Game but it sounds fascinating so thanks for bringing it to my attention. And I’m still jealous that you have Where Dreams Descend. It’s definitely in my top five anticipated books of the year!! Unread book wise I have A Ballad Of Songbirds & Snakes but it’s definitely high priority on my TBR once I finish my library books. I was thinking of rereading the original series first but I’m also so desperate to get to it that I may just skip that for a change 😂

      1. Im sure we will if her previous books are anything to go by 😉 Kingdom Of Back, Addie La Rue, Where Dreams Descend, Chain Of Gold and Ballad Of Songbirds And Snakes. I’m probably forgetting some but I think they’d be the top five 😂

      2. Ooh they’re all on my TBR too (although I did have to check the last one. I’d know the title if I was up to date 🙈). I’m pretty curious about Instant Karma as it sounds so different to everything else that the authors write.
I realized that A Golden Fury should be on my list too but I couldn’t think of the name before. And Kingdom Of The Wicked which I completely forgot. Basically there are dozens 😂😂

      3. Yeah I think it is. Was it adult too or am I remembering wrongly? Yeah there really are. Definitely too many to keep up with 😂

  3. ahhhhh Chain of Gold – you’re in on a treat my friend!! And whaaat Lord of Shadows OMG please finish and start Queen of Air and Darkness – 900 pages of Cassie Clare romance (a little too many POVs, but other than that, her style in every possible great way!)

      1. YESS!!! Mmmmmh, I think my favorite would be Lady Midnight a) cause it was my first and b) because I feel like she developed as a writer and the characters in that series are so much more complex than in the others and I love the Emma and Julian romance!
But on the other hand, Chain of Gold was fantastic as well and so I guess they share a number one fave spot haha!
        Which one’s your fave?

      2. Ooh, that’s an awesome pick!! Emma and Julian forever lol!
That makes me even more hyped to read CoG though hehe.
At the moment…probably either Clockwork Prince or Clockwork Princess. Will, Jem, and Tessa will always hold a special place in my heart!

      3. Hahaha yes, they’re one of my favorite literary couples haha! Ahh, I have to admit that the Clockwork series was my least favorite and that I skipped the last book to read City of Bones because I couldn’t wait haha! I do have to finish the series, or maybe reread it all together!

      4. Yesss! Oh really??? It’s definitely the slowest of her series, I think! Haha I feel that, for some reason I want to reread them all even though I’m not fully caught up yet? Lol I hope you enjoy them if you reread them!💜
