Hi friends! I’m here to convince you to pick up a book that I’m sure you’ve heard of by now*, and that came out yesterday so happy book birthday A Dress For The Wicked! I want to start by saying that this book won’t be for everyone, but for a certain audience it’ll be an enjoyable read!
*probably from me if nothing else because i never shut up about what i like
Nothing much happens in the sleepy town of Shy in Avon-upon-Kynt. And for eighteen years, Emmaline Watkins has feared that her future held just that: nothing.
But when the head of the most admired fashion house in the country opens her prestigious design competition to girls from outside the stylish capital city, Emmy’s dreams seem closer than they ever have before.
As the first “country girl” to compete, Emmy knows she’ll encounter extra hurdles on her way to the top. But as she navigates the twisted world of high fashion she starts to wonder: will she be able to tailor herself to fit into this dark, corrupted race? And at what cost?
All The Fashion Descriptions!
That may seem obvious considering the entire plot of the book, but it’s so rare to find books revolving around fashion. I found it so fascinating to read about everyone’s different styles, and their interpretation of certain challenges.
Competitions are my FAVE. I mean, sabotage! Alliances! Surprise twists! They’re my actual Kryptonite, and I’m pushing for more of them in YA.
It does take a while for said friendships to develop, and you might be sitting there thinking “huh???” but it features excellent character development that turns into excellent friendship and I could highkey scream forever okay.
A Fun, Light, End of Summer Read!
I’m always reading deep, dark fantasy books. It’s a problem. So it was really nice to pick something up that was easy to fly through, entertaining, and feel-good!
Look, my favorite trilogy of anything ever in the entire world* is The Infernal Devices. So when anything is mentioned to be even slightly influenced by the Victorian era, I will go OUTSIDE AND SOCIALIZE to do it. Yes, I am that extreme. Not only is the fashion inspired by it, the whole setting is. And I’m so here for it.
