It’s August and with it comes the start of one of the worst times of the year. You see, from about January-March and then August-October/November, it feels like publishers go WILD with the books they release. I mean, I’m overwhelmed by my own list but there are also 1000 sequels to books I haven’t even read yet. It’s a truly terrifying time for TBRs everywhere.
august releases I’ve already read/am reading

Three Kisses, One Midnight by Roshani Chokshi, Evelyn Skye, and Sandhya Menon | Who knew that an anthology all about Halloween and romance would become my favorite anthology of all time (or at least incredibly close to Ghosts of the Shadow Market which has an unfair advantage anyways because of Will Herondale and Jem Carstairs). This follows three best friends who, on Halloween night, plan to give a love potion to each of their true loves. It’s chaotic and adorable and witchy. I gave it 4/5 stars, and this comes out on August 30th!
Belladonna by Adalyn Grace | If anyone has been following my Goodreads updates* then you’ll know that Belladonna has had me freaking out. This is a gothic romance murder-mystery following a girl who can see spirits and communicate with death. From the moment I read the synopsis, I knew that I was going to love and so far, my suspicions seem to be quite correct. This comes out on August 30th as well!
*if you do follow me, i am so sorry about my survive the night and atlas paradox updates bc i am dumb
YA releases i want asap!

Lightlark by Alex Aster | This book has already been optioned for a movie which means one of two things: either this book is terrible, or it’s incredible. Either way, it’s about how six rulers are invited every 100 years to participate in a deadly competition. This comes out on August 30th!
The Liar’s Crown by Abigail Owen | This book follows a girl who stands in for her twin sister on her wedding day. However, on the day of the arranged marriage, a shadowy figure swoops in with the intent to kidnap the princess but gets her twin sister instead. Not only does that sound like a fantastic romantic fantasy, but the cover has me screaming. This is released on August 30th!
How To Survive Your Murder by Danielle Valentine | This sounds like the concept of Happy Death Day meets Scream. Basically, a girl who is the sole witness in her sister’s murder trial gets knocked out the day of. And suddenly, she ends up back on the day her sister was murdered. The clock is ticking to find out who the killer is. This comes out on August 30th!
A Venom Dark and Sweet by Judy I. Lin | This is the conclusion to the fun Book of Tea duology, a Chinese-inspired fantasy series about tea magic and political intrigue. This releases on August 23rd!
adult books I’m excited for!

Daisy Darker by Alice Feeney | I read two Alice Feeney books the past month, and I have been so bad at guessing her twists that of course, her latest book is going on my TBR. Plus, this one is a homage to Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None. I do love a good island murder mystery.
The Spear That Cuts Through Water by Simon Jimenez | “Two warriors shepherd an ancient god across a broken land to end the tyrannical reign of a royal family” BYE. Also, we love seeing POC authors getting the gorgeous book cover treatment that they deserve.
Babel by R.F. Kuang | Someone said that this reads like a textbook and the college part of me cried but the academic part of me cheered. I love how this is a fantasy that breaks down colonialism and the history of translation at Oxford in England.
diverse releases to put on your radar: a thriller with an asian protagonist and author and a fantasy with an autistic asian author!

So that’s it! Tell me: what book are YOU most excited to read in August?

I can’t believe Babel AND The Book Eaters is coming out on the same month 💀 I just do not have the time to read both with all the other releases I’m anticipating, especially How To Survive Your Murder. And there’s some major sequels coming out too 😭 rip my wallet

So many gorgeous covers and releases that I’m desperately looking forward to reading! Babel definitely has to be one of the more popular ones but I’m also so keen on the second book in Lin’s series, Belladonna and The Book Eaters (sounds so good)! 😍
