Top 5 Tropes I Can’t Get Enough Of!

Hi friends! If you know me, then you know that I ramble endlessly about my favorite things to see in books. Luckily, today’s Top 5 Tuesday topic (hosted by Meeghan!) is all about favorite tropes!

Enemies-To-Lovers

Look, if I’m being honest…I love enemies-to-lovers a little too much. It doesn’t matter if everything else about the book screams “meh” at me, I’ll run with arms outstretched towards it if there’s a hint of toxic love. I’m messed-up, I know.

Magical Schools!

I love dark academia and I love magic, so I guess it’s only fitting that I love magical schools. That way while I’m in the middle of doing math, I can daydream that I’m learning magical spells and fairytales. Oh, to live in a world of wonderous learning.

Family Drama/Found Families

These sort of go together but also not really. Anyways, I love books where there’s family drama, like in Fable with Fable and Saint and their vague relationship. I also do love found families where a ragtag army in need of a shower somehow defeats a global superpower*…with the power of friendship!

*am i a boomer for making hamilton references in 2021 because if so i don’t regret it

Love Triangles (sometimes)

First of all, love triangles can be good. Just read The Infernal Devices if you don’t believe me. On that note, one of the other reasons I sometimes enjoy them is that it’s just kinda fun? Like, you’ll have all of these different readers discussing why they ship one person better than the other. I don’t know, maybe I just like spice and watching the book world burn.

Carnivals/Competitions

GUYS. If there’s lush, dreamy writing combined with either a magical competition or a unique sort of carnival setting, I’m already in love. I feel like creativity is allowed to flourish in these settings! I mean, you can introduce so many character arcs, so much worldbuilding, all against the backdrop of whimsy.

So that’s it! What’s one of your favorite tropes?

  3. I don’t like love triangles in general but I agree they work fine in some books and I enjoyed it in the Clockwork series even though I’m team Will. I loved enemies to lovers in Folk of the Air and I hope to enjoy it in Song of Wraiths and Ruin that is on shelf.

Enemies to lovers and found family are classics for a reason—I will never get enough of either of them 😍😍 Also, you have officially convinced me to give the Infernal Devices a try!! I’ve heard so many things about the romance… I’m prepared to have my heart ripped out 😌
