Most Anticipated August 2020 Releases!! // aka i am a sucker for magical competitions

Hi friends! I’m hyped to share my most anticipated August 2020 releases! There are quite a few, so let’s do this.

August 4th

Lobizona by Romina Garber | Okay but Argentine folklore??? Plus social commentary on the whole “illegal immigrant” thing in the U.S., and how so many are prejudiced against simply because they’re documented. I’ve also heard several OwnVoices reviewers say they enjoyed this, so I really want to give it a chance.

Midnight Sun by Stephanie Meyer | Have I read the entire Twilight series? Heck no. Did I see the words “drawing on the classic myth of Hades and Persephone” and reluctantly add this to my TBR? …maybe. Even if this from Edward’s* POV, I still want to give it a chance.

*i really despise him tbh

The Game by Linsey Miller | Even though I didn’t enjoy this one very much, I still wanted to highlight it here in case anyone was curious! Basically, this follows a girl named Lia and during the annual game that the seniors play, someone ends up dead. So yeah.

They Wish They Were Us by Jessica Townsend | I didn’t love this one either but on the other hand, I can definitely see how many people could enjoy it! This has a lot of Gossip Girls vibes, with just a dash of One of Us is Lying.

August 11th

Star Daughter by Shveta Thakrar | Stars! Stars! STARS*. This is a girl who’s the daughter of a star and a mortal. There’s a star court! And a competition! I have the highest of expectations for this.

*why do i sound like a five year old chanting something in response to dora the explorer-

All Eyes On Her by L.E. Flynn | This is a YA thriller but it’s basically told from the perspective of everyone except for the alleged killer. This concept holds so much potential to be a great psychological thriller.

Raybearer by Jordan Ifueko | I think this highkey has enemies-to-lovers? AND THAT IS MY WEAKNESS. That’s also roughly all I know about this book so um I guess I’m easily convinced.

August 25th

The Notorious Virtues by Alwyn Hamilton | A…magical…competition*. About a girl pitted against her family to decide who will be heir! Also, there seems to be a mystery. I mean, I’m pretty hyped!

*apparently i like competitions way too much

Where Dreams Descend by Janella Angeles | I just watched Moulin Rouge so basically this book* is my new obsession. I hope this doesn’t make me cry though. This is another competition book with magicians!

The Companion by Katie Alender | I have been wanting to read nothing but gothic books recently. And this seems to be a gothic horror + mystery book, so I’m super hyped to read this!!

Clown in a Cornfield by Adam Cesare | I actually don’t read horror. It’s not very prevalent in the YA genre*, and I haven’t jumped properly into horror. But…I love the two IT movies, and I’m totally up for reading this because clowns.

*plus…i usually go “ooh! sparkly fantasy!” at the library

That’s it! Eleven books…that’s honestly more than I read in a month. But I truly do want to get to each of these at some point, because they all sound fantastic! Tell me:

  1. I love the sound of so many of these. I have such high hopes for Where Dreams Descend and seriously hope to treat myself to a copy of it. Notorious Virtues another that I’ve been waiting for, for a while. I get that you don’t like Edward but on the bright side he’s a mind reader so you get to see inside of other people’s heads; that’s a plus right?
I love that Lobizona and Raybearer are here too, they both sound fantastic. Ooh and I have to mention All Eyes On Her because it sounds incredible 😍
Thanks for including The Companion as I hadn’t heard of it and I’m 100% checking it out now. If you’re up for an adult Gothic Horror then I fully recommend The Silent Companions, it was such an atmospheric, creepy little book.

      1. Yay that’s wonderful to hear, I’m glad you enjoyed it. It does 😍 yay I’m glad to hear it. Although I can’t believe you forgot that 😂
Ooh yay I’ll keep an eye out for then. I love the sound of those sort of stories. I hope you enjoy it if you do end up reading it. The author has three gothic horror books but I’ve still got to read one of them.
