Top 5 Tuesday: Top 5 Books I Enjoyed But Others Didn’t!

Hi friends! I decided to do a backlist Top 5 Tuesday topic today: books I liked that others didn’t! I guess I’m controversial in more than one way! Shanah @ Bionic Bookworm is currently taking a break, but she’s the host of this great series!

When I first read this book, I had no idea how polarazing it actually is??? Like, 2017 me was just happily flipping through the pages, dreamily imagining circuses and magical dresses and having no idea what was real and what wasn’t. I genuinely love this trilogy for several reasons, but I can totally see how some people might not. Although, Jack* is worth at least 2 stars all on his own so DON’T BELIEVE ANY ONE STAR REVIEWS (jk jk).

*it’s been a hot second since i’ve mentioned him hasn’t it? i’ll bet y’all were relieved…HA. JUST WAIT UNTIL I REREAD.

This is such a good political fantasy!!!! Unfortunately, many people were disappointed by this one. Which is understandable! I don’t hate you! At least I don’t think so…JK. Anyways, I loved the Chinese influences, and the twists, and the characters. ALSO how on earth can you gaze at this cover and argue with it…? IMPOSSIBLE I TELL YOU.

Now this is what I call a “love it or want to throw it into the dumpster pit of fire” kind of book. It’s a YA thriller, so we have an unreliable narrator and lots of teenage drama. Usually, I wouldn’t adore the drama but it actually worked in this book for me. AND THE ENDING. Okay, I can see how some people might hate it, but this was my first experience with that particular ending. Like, I was so shook I just sat and cried for a while. And sniffled at my bathroom curtain*.

*in retrospect…i’m not sure why? possibly because it’s beach-themed and this book involves the beach? idk i made zero sense

I seriously enjoyed this! This was quite literally a fantasy Project Runway and so obviously I just had to fall in love. Like, the cover is beautiful, the competition aspect is intriguing, and I love fashion. Even if I have no taste. This is just amazing!

Okay I don’t know if I still love this trilogy, but this was basically my Hunger Games. I hadn’t read YA before this trilogy, let alone dystopian, so this was like entering a portal to a brand new world. This gets a lot of hate but honestly? I would probably still sob reading the first and third books. They were excellent at making me cry.

So that’s it! Tell me:

What’s a book you loved that others didn’t?

  1. Great post! I’ve heard very mixed things about Caraval but I still want to read it. I enjoyed the first Maze Runner book when I first read it. I didn’t like the others as much.

  2. Hi Kaya-

Embarrassed to say I’ve never read any of these, but will look for at least a few that look like they’ll appeal to my sensibilities. I don’t typically read YA, but your comments about “we are liars” has me intrigued.

  3. I’ve only read the first book in the Caraval series, but can’t wait to keep going! I liked the first book, but hope it only gets better, haha! Never read The Maze Runner, but I can get how it’d be a favorite of yours if it was an introduction into that genre!! The Darkest Powers is that series for me (: Great post!! xx

  4. I LOVE Caraval! It’s been a while since I read it, and I still need to finish the series. I’m probably going to reread it soon! Great post! ❤

  5. I have not read a single book from this list XD but I’ve seen the first Maze Runner movie and I liked it (even if I didn’t understand everything). Honestly, I can’t remember a series I enjoyed but others didn’t (or at least not right now). It is usually the opposite since I tend to not like books/series that other people really like. Great post, as per usual!

  6. oooh this post was really interesting!! CARAVAL has been recommended to me so many times i didn’t even know it was unpopular?? same with DESCENDANT OF THE CRANE actually! i haven’t heard of WE WERE LIARS or A DRESS FOR THE WICKED but the first seems so fascinating?! i have to say… THE MAZE RUNNER was iconic to me though. i agree. if i read it again, i know i would 100% hate it, but i haven’t read it so I can live in peace. loved this post ♥

    1. I’m glad!💜 LOL it’s definitely super popular for how many people read it! I hope you enjoy them if you read them! And yesss, We Were Liars is so cool. Yesss, it’s not definitely not due for a reread😂😅 awww, thank you so much!
