Onward Film Review!! // a new favorite disney movie

Hi friends! I’m here to review a movie recently added to Disney+. I’m really sad this didn’t get the chance to make money in theaters. BUT I am thankful that many of us still have the oppurtunity to watch it, so read on for my thoughts!

To quote IMDB, this is a story of, “Two elven brothers embark on a quest to bring their father back for one day”. To quote me, “Two elven brothers SKKJDJKSDJCKKJDJDKDJSJ”. One of those is clearly the more eloquent statement.

First of all, I’d just like to state for the jury that Tom Holland and Chris Pratt are the only acceptable duo in this household. Now that that’s out of the way…I am ready to scream.

ASDFGHJKL.

Ahem. To begin, the animation? Gorgeous, as always. I couldn’t help but be enchanted by the stars and rivers, by the fantasy creatures that roamed this suburban world. The world itself was reminiscent of Zootopia, with certain creatures inhabiting a suburban world. Magic was a thing of the past, as everyone had taken to technology as it was simpler. I liked that aspect a lot!

Ian is a wary, kind of socially awkward teenager*. He never got to meet his dad, so he’d give anything for the chance to see him. Barley is his older brother, a total weirdo who adores magic and is in general hilariously weird**.

*do you mean: me?
**again: do you mean me?

I think now is the time to admit that I cried. A lot. Actually, I cried writing this post. Because this movie? It’s so, so emotional. Pixar just has a way of hitting you straight in the feels. I honestly would rank this one right around Up though, because it’s crafted so well. It’s funny, and entertaining, and you can’t help but fall in love with the adorkable characters. However, it’s also so powerful and emotional. The final scenes are so…memorable. I think this movie demonstrated the power of relationships so effortlessly, so smoothly, that it left my ears ringing with music and my eyes brimming with tears.

While this movie is a lot of fun, it also isn’t the MOST original thing ever plot-wise. I personally didn’t care, but if you’re the type to really enjoy twists and turns in an original way, this doesn’t quite deliver on that front.

I think that’s it! In summary, this is a fun, rather hilarious ride that’s shockingly moving. It doesn’t do anything super spectacular, but I think I liked it partly for that reason anyways. Onward is honest-to-goodness one of my new favorite Disney movies! Tell me: have you seen this? Do you plan to?

  1. Since you mentioned the world itself was reminiscent of Zootopia, I think I’ll have to check it out. I’ve seen zootopia and I absolutely loved every minute of it. Secondly, its Disney Pixar and who doesn’t love those guys? For the love of Disney movies.

  2. I was going to watch this then the cinema closed before I got a chance to (same with Misbehaviour). I’m glad you enjoyed it so much! I’ll have to keep an eye out for when it becomes available for me to watch on Netflix or Now TV. It does sound like it’s got a lovely emotional backstory and I also love that you compared yourself to both characters :L
