Renegades by Marissa Meyer Review! | I will go down with this ship…

Hi friends! I reread Renegades by Marissa Meyer the other day because Archenemies just came out.

and I realized I have no review up on it.

SO this is my late review for a book I read a while ago! Yay me!

Secret Identities. Extraordinary Powers. She wants vengeance. He wants justice.

The Renegades are a syndicate of prodigies — humans with extraordinary abilities — who emerged from the ruins of a crumbled society and established peace and order where chaos reigned. As champions of justice, they remain a symbol of hope and courage to everyone… except the villains they once overthrew.

Nova has a reason to hate the Renegades, and she is on a mission for vengeance. As she gets closer to her target, she meets Adrian, a Renegade boy who believes in justice — and in Nova. But Nova’s allegiance is to a villain who has the power to end them both.

“Heroism wasn’t about what you could do, it was about what you did. It was about who you saved when they needed saving.”

I have no words for this book. Somehow, it was even better the second time??? Marissa Meyer is one of my all-time favorite authors. I don’t know why I felt the need to tell you that BUT I DID.

The way she sets up her characters in this story is pure brilliance. It’s like a chess game where I feel proud because I’m not dumb and know more than the characters for once.

AND THE SHIPSSSSS.

Oscar  and Ruby are cute adorable children who won’t admit their feelings. And Oscar is disabled!!!!!!! His weaknesses are acknowledged but his strengths are never downplayed. Speaking of diversity, Adrian is described as having darker skin and Nova is Italian-Filipino and I stan diversity.

but anyway: back to the ships

Adrian and Nova are my LIFE. They hate each other but also don’t and sometimes don’t know they hate each other and I ship them so hard. Slow-burn romances are my absolute favorite and Marissa doesn’t disappoint!

Adrian is truly the most pure cinnamon roll and Nova the most kick-butt bacon. But anyway, characters aside, I love how unique the powers were??? It’s practically impossible to create an original superhero story but the author did a fantastic job! And can I just say I’d love to have Sketch’s power*???

*wait wait wait do you think it would be possible to draw Shadowhunter runes?! And make them work???? I MUST KNOW THIS COULD BE THE NEXT BEST THING SINCE THE MOON

A lot of people say this is really slow and I can see why. However, I was pulled in from page one and easily read at least 150 pages per sitting. The second half especially is packed full of iconic and exciting scenes! And the banter was perfect??? Adrian literally groans because “Is this a villain speech?” I’m dead from laughing, see ya in the graveyard.

One cannot be brave who has no fear.

AND THE SHIPS oh wait I already talked about them but I ship it. So hard. This is actually a great book both for people who enjoy superheroes and those who don’t! It doesn’t really play out like what you’d expect a hero book to be, but then hardcore fans will catch some references and tropes!

I’m left with a ridiculous amount of questions that I can’t say because spoilers but um truth be told I never was yours, the fear the fear of falling apart*!

*in case you are confused, those were song lyrics

Tell me, have you read this? Do you like superhero books?
