Tag Tuesday | Tropes I Love!

Hi friends! We’re gathered here today to celebrate

princess bride mawwaige

Or, you know, beloved tropes. Either one. This is hosted by the amazing blogger Shanah @ Bionic Bookworm, so definitely go check her and all of her great posts out!!

Love Triangles!

Yeah, let’s start controversial! But seriously, if these are done right, love triangles can make or break a book. The entire TID love triangle was beautiful and heartbreaking and perfect and original, while The Selection one just felt…useless? The only way to write on of these is to make everyone love everyone whether platonic or romantic, and develop EVERY CHARACTER*.

Enemies to Lovers!

Or even just “competitors with great chemistry and banter to lovers”. No one can deny how brilliant this trope is, because it allows for characters, plot, and relationships to be furthered all at the same time! But also the ships. Cuz I’m a ship shipping ship shipping shipping ships WHEW*. As long as it isn’t an abusive relationship, I’m always there for a good enemies to lovers trope.

The Chosen One!

Okay so it totally depends when it comes to this trope. How this trope in the Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson unfolded was downright brilliant. But sometimes the trope can come off as shallow or lazy? Like Shadow and Bone?  Like give me a good, complex character and pepper that trope with a light sprinkling of plot twists*.

Morally Ambiguous Characters

YES YES YES. I actually adore all the sweet, cinnamon roll characters but morally ambiguous ones are also my faves. You never know what they’ll do next! Like me! And also they’re prime candidates for the enemies to lovers thing. Just sayin.

Royalty

I don’t know why but I will never deny the power of the “long lost royalty” trope? It opens up the door for SO MUCH. I do hate it when everyone ever doesn’t want to claim the crown like can we have a dedicated monarch main character for once?

So that’s it! I had a ton of fun with this post, but I also realized just how many tropes I really hated, so stay tuned for next week’s post! Tell me your favorite tropes, au revoir!

  1. Great list! Enemies to lovers trope is a huge favorite of mine. That’s why I put The Cruel Prince and To Kill a Kingdom on my TBR. I can’t wait to read them for that trope.

Morally ambiguous characters are favorite as well! 😀

    1. Thank you!! Well, it’s middle-grade so it has it’s cheesy moments but overall I found it really enjoyable?? Now that my taste has changed I’d have to reread it to give you an honest answer but back when I first read it I read it 5 times in a row😂😂 I think it depends though!

      1. You’re welcome! Aww 😂😂 When I was 7-6 there was this one pony book I LOVED and I must have read it a hundred times and then I would skip through it and read the bits I liked and it was just perfection to me 😂
